a Pinecone,
and other gentle ephemeralities
Senior Thesis in Drama
By Xander Setchko

I devised the piece a Pinecone, and other gentle ephemeralities for my independent senior thesis at Vassar College. It is a 15-minute long immersive, devised piece with a focus in design. It is designed for an intimate audience of 5-6 attendees, and it was performed 12 times in April 2024. I was the lighting, sound, scenic, props, and costume designer, as well as the performer and manager.
The purpose of my thesis project was to dive into my relationship to art and art-making, focusing on process instead of product. I wanted to explore light as an ephemeral medium, the implications theater as an ephemeral medium, joining poetry and the outdoors, letting exploration, curiosity, and love lead the way. I considered the act of designing in theater, how artists are both in and out of control, and the paradox of trying to recreate the world when the very thing that makes the world so incredible, beautiful, amazing-- is because it is uncontrollable.
